Sajna – a quiet Warmian river through historic Reszel

The Sajna is a small river on the border of Warmia and Masuria - a left tributary of the Guber, and through the Guber and the Łyna part of the Pregolya basin. It is about 50.6 km long and flows, among other places, through Reszel, one of the prettier towns in the region. It sees little traffic, so it is good for watching wildlife.

This is not a grand, spectacular route - and that is exactly its value. The Sajna flows quietly through the forests and meadows of the Mrągowo Lakeland and the Sępopol Plain.

The Sajna route: Sątoczno – Sępopol

The most commonly chosen option starts on the lower stretch of the Sajna, just past the bridge in Sątoczno, and continues along the Guber towards Sępopol. The route runs through wooded and meadow terrain, and its difficulty depends on the obstacles: there are fallen trees and small backwaters, and a portage on the Guber before Sępopol; the sources give no descriptions of obstacles on the Sajna above Sątoczno, the bottom is muddy in places, and the current changes with the water level. It is a route rather for someone with some experience than for a complete novice.

Near the end, by the buildings of Sępopol, at a fork you turn left, and before the weir you carry the kayaks along the left bank; the trip ends before the bridge, just before the mouth on the Łyna. The banks give both shade (wooded stretches) and sun (open meadows). The greatest asset is the quiet - the fewer people, the more wildlife to watch. You can see the whole course on the interactive trail map.

Nature along the Sajna: beavers and the white-tailed eagle

The Sajna rewards the patient. Beavers keep house on the water and in the riverside scrub, and the white-tailed eagle hunts over the valley. The river's calm, little-used character means the animals feel at ease here, and a paddler moving quietly has a chance to watch and photograph them.

Region and history: Reszel and Święta Lipka

The jewel of the trail is Reszel - one of the best-preserved medieval towns in Warmia, through which the Sajna flows. Above the town looms the 14th-century Gothic castle of the Warmian bishops, surrounded by a brick, historic old town with bridges. In Reszel in 1811 Barbara Zdunk was burned; historians stress, however, that the sentence was passed for arson and murder, and that the witchcraft thread is a later legend. Nearby lies the sanctuary at Święta Lipka, so a Sajna trip is easy to combine with visiting the most precious monuments of this part of Warmia.

Stretches of the Sajna trip: from Reszel to Sępopol

The Sajna divides into two short stages. The upper stretch runs through historic Reszel with its Gothic castle, along a quiet and wild Warmian river. The lower stretch, Sątoczno-Sępopol, is the calm course of the lower Sajna, then on the waters of the Guber to Sępopol. You can see every stretch on the map below - in "Take it easy" mode, with facilities and water levels along the way. And if you'd rather plan the trip your own way, you can draw your own route in "Your own way" mode.

Towns and villages along the Sajna

The heart of the trail is Reszel, with its castle and old town; the kayak start is convenient to begin around Sątoczno, and the route ends in Sępopol on the Sępopol Plain, near the mouth on the Łyna. The Sajna is a proposal for quiet, a wild valley and the nearness of one of the most beautiful Warmian towns.

Frequently asked questions about paddling the Sajna:

How long is the Sajna trail?
The Sajna itself is 50.6 km long and joins the Guber at Sątoczno. Most people paddle its lower stretch, then continue on the waters of the Guber to Sępopol - a calm, intimate weekend option. Higher up, through historic Reszel, the river is narrow and wild.
Is paddling the Sajna suitable for beginners and families?
It depends on the stretch. The confirmed and easy option is the lower one: from Sątoczno, then along the Guber to Sępopol - here the current is calm and the route suits families. No available kayaking source describes the upper Sajna from Reszel, so expect weirs left by old mills and overgrown stretches; that section is rather for someone with experience.
What is worth seeing while paddling the Sajna?
The Sajna's biggest attraction is Reszel, with one of the best-preserved Gothic bishops' castles in Warmia. Beyond that, the trail runs through a quiet, wild valley and ends in Sępopol on the Łyna.
How long does paddling the Sajna take?
The most commonly paddled option - from Sątoczno, then along the Guber to Sępopol - is a calm one-day trip. Anyone who wants longer starts higher up, through historic Reszel.
When is the best time to paddle the Sajna?
The season runs from spring to autumn. A small, winding river can be shallow and overgrown at low water - before you set off it is worth checking the current water level.
