Before you set off on a kayak trip down a chosen river, check how much water is in it. Too little turns the trip into dragging the boat over stones; too much into a fight with a racing current that, on an otherwise easy river, can be truly dangerous. The water level is one of the few things you can check from home, and probably the most important. The good news: it reads more simply than its technical name suggests - you just need to know what to look for.
What is the water level and what does a gauge show?
A gauge is a graduated staff or an automatic sensor, usually by a bridge or on the bank. It shows the height of the water surface relative to the station's nominal zero, given in centimetres - not how much water you have under your kayak. That distinction is crucial: 120 cm on one river can mean a comfortable trip, and on another barely a brush of the bottom, because every station has a different zero and a different channel. IMGW-PIB runs over 900 such gauges across Poland and provides their readings live; it is these that my water-level box uses.
Water level versus discharge - how do they differ?
Alongside the level (in cm), IMGW sometimes gives the discharge - the volume of water passing through the river's cross-section, in cubic metres per second. Discharge more faithfully captures "how much is really flowing", because it does not depend on the shape of the channel at the measuring point, but not every station calculates it and it is harder to judge intuitively. For planning a trip the level is entirely enough - provided you read it in the context of the given river, and not as a bare number.
How many centimetres is a good water level for a trip?
The figure in centimetres alone says little until you know what counts as little and what as a lot for that river. What matters is the range typical for a given stretch, and two thresholds set by IMGW: the warning level and the alarm level. When the level nears the warning one, the water is high and fast - a signal to rather give it a miss; passing the alarm level already means the water threatens buildings and people. A rise itself begins much lower, still before the warning threshold - and a trip is off long before the alarm. That is why, instead of a raw number, I translate the reading into a simple assessment you can see at a glance.
Low, optimal, high - how to tell the water level apart?
For every river I reduce the reading to one of three states. Low - the water is shallow, in places you will scrape the bottom and have to carry the kayak; the trip is tiring but rarely dangerous. Optimal - good, comfortable conditions, the water carries you and obstacles are no more numerous than usual. High - the water is big and racing; take care or give it up. For a few popular rivers (including the Krutynia, Wkra, Czarna Hańcza, Brda, Drawa and Biebrza) I have set my own, tested thresholds in centimetres; for the rest I rely on the IMGW classification.
Why does the same level mean something different on different rivers?
There is no single rule for all of Poland, because rivers differ in temperament. Small, mountain and foothill ones - like the Carpathian tributaries or the Marózka - react violently: after a night's downpour they can rise by half a metre and drop just as quickly. Large lowland rivers, such as the San in its lower course or the Warta, change slowly and forgive more. The bed matters too: on stony rivers a low level is felt under the hull at once, while on sandy and muddy ones it stays deep for longer. That is why the same "optimal" is a different level on the Dunajec than on the Wkra.
When is the water level too low for a trip?
A low level rarely endangers you, but it can spoil the day. On shallow, stony stretches the trip turns into constant getting out and dragging the kayak, and in the heat there is the added warmed-up, standing water and more mosquitoes at dusk. If comfortable paddling matters to you and the river is one of the shallow ones, wait after rain for a higher reading or choose bigger, deeper water.
When is the water level too high and dangerous?
A high level is a different league. The current speeds up, eddies form on the bends and behind obstacles, and the most dangerous things become fallen trees and branches just below the surface - so-called strainers, which water flows through but a kayak with a person does not. Add to that flooded bushes that the current pushes you into, and a harder exit onto a submerged, slippery bank. "A lot of water" does not mean "easier": at a high level it is harder to steer, harder to stop, and the water is colder and faster. On a river in spate even the experienced stay on the bank.
How do the season and the trend change the water level?
A single reading tells you about a moment, not the whole trend - check whether the water is rising or falling. The rhythm of the year is fairly steady: the spring thaw raises the level for weeks, high summer often brings low water and the shallowest levels, and autumn rains raise it again. Add to that the last few days' weather: heavy rain in the catchment above your stretch will change the situation before you reach it, because the flood wave travels downriver with a delay. That is why it is worth looking not only at today's number, but also at what it did over the last twenty-four hours.
How to judge the water level on the spot, by the river?
The best gauge is at the put-in. Watch how fast a thrown stick or leaf drifts, whether the water is clear or carries silt and branches (a sign of a fresh rise), and whether you can see the bottom by the bank. Glance at the marks on the bridge piers or on the vegetation - freshly flooded grass reveals that the level has just risen. Ask at the rental or the locals; no one knows the river better than those who paddle it every week.
