The rivers around Kraków flow down from the Carpathians towards the Vistula, which is why the water level and the pace of the current change with the weather far more here than on the calm lowland rivers. The shortest drive leads into the Beskid Wyspowy to the Raba and into the Pieniny to the Dunajec; further east waits the Wisłoka from below the Beskid Niski, and to the north, already out of the mountains, the warm and shallow Ponidzie with the Nida. Each of these routes suits a different kind of expedition.
The biggest thrill is the Pieniny Gorge on the Dunajec, where the river cuts between limestone crags. This is a route for people with experience or under a guide's care. Anyone looking for calmer water will find it on the Nida and in the lower reaches of the other rivers.

Dunajec
A classic of the Polish mountains. The Pieniny Gorge between Sromowce and Szczawnica is the most famous mountain stretch in the country, with a lively current and limestone walls above the water.
Wisłoka
From below the Beskid Niski, navigable from Jasło through Dębica and Mielec. The mountain character of the upper reaches gives way to a wide, sandy bed on the lowland.
Nida
A lazy river, well warmed in summer, among the gypsum hills of Ponidzie, one of the easiest for learning and a family trip. The Żerniki-Nowy Korczyn stretch.
Which river is nearest Kraków?
The shortest drives lead into the Beskid Wyspowy to the Raba and east to the Dunajec, both within roughly an hour and a half. The Nida in Ponidzie and the Wisłoka around Jasło lie a little further, about two hours. The Dunajec draws people above all with the gorge in the Pieniny, reached from the side of Sromowce Niżne or Krościenko.
Which river to choose for a first trip or with children?
For a start the best is the Nida: warm, shallow and slow, with no difficult obstacles and a long stretch through Ponidzie. The lower reaches of the Raba and Wisłoka can be gentle too, when the water is not high. The mountain Dunajec, especially in the gorge, calls for experience and is better left for later – and at high water, best skipped altogether.
Into the mountains for a bigger thrill
The Dunajec in the Pieniny Gorge is the best-known mountain stretch in Poland, running between the crags of the Pieniny National Park. The upper reaches of the Raba in the Beskid Wyspowy and the Wisłoka in the Beskid Niski have a livelier current too. On all the Carpathian rivers the water level can change within a few hours, so before you set off it is worth checking it, and postponing your plans when the river is in spate.
