Paddling Masuria is a different thing from a mountain river: here it is not the current that matters but the space. The trails lead from lake to lake, along channels gouged out by the glacier, and between them run stretches of river through alder carr and reedbeds. The water is clean and calm, which is why for generations the region has been reckoned the best place for a first-ever trip and for an outing with children.
The heart of Masurian kayaking is the Great Masurian Lakes and the Pisz Forest that adjoins them, the largest unbroken woodland in the region. This is where Poland's most famous water trail, the Krutynia, runs, but all around wait a handful of far less crowded rivers where quiet is easy to find even at the height of summer.

Where to start kayaking in Masuria?
With the Krutynia. The route from Sorkwity to Ruciane-Nida runs about 102 km, passing through a dozen or so lakes and reserves, and it paddles gently and safely in stages of a dozen or so kilometres. It is the model trail for a first multi-day trip. Anyone with less time can paddle just the middle stretch through the Krutynia reserve, the loveliest part of the river.
Where is it quieter in Masuria?
Away from the Krutynia the crowds are far thinner. The intimate Sapina winds through the lakes of northern Masuria, the Dajna threads nine lakes together with weirs and the traces of old mills, and the short Węgorapa below Węgorzewo gives a livelier current in a wooded gorge. The Pisa, in turn, carries the waters of the Great Lakes through the Pisz Forest down to the Narew and makes for a calm, forest trip.
When to go kayaking in Masuria?
The season runs from late spring to early autumn. July and August are the busiest months on the Krutynia, so for peace and quiet it is better to come in June or September, when the water is still warm and the trails much emptier. On the crossings of the larger lakes you must always reckon with wind and waves, so it is worth watching the forecast and keeping to the shore.
Where to rent a kayak in Masuria
Rentals and water stations operate along all the popular trails, most densely on the Krutynia, among others in Sorkwity, Krutyń and Ruciane-Nida. Most also run kayak transport and pick-up from the finish, so a trip can be put together with no gear of your own.
